October 18, 2010 Matthew 26:69-28:20

When Judas found out that Jesus had been condemned to die, he took the 30 pieces of silver and after admitting his sin, threw the silver into the temple. The chief priests and elders bought a field to bury foreigners in with the money. (See Zechariah 11:12-13) This fulfilled the word of Jeremiah 19:1-13. Then Judas hanged himself. Meanwhile, Jesus was being questioned. Pilate asked Him if He was king of the Jews. Jesus said that Pilate said He was. The chief priests and elders all questioned Jesus and He said nothing. It was the custom for the governor to release a prisoner during the Feast. He asked whether Jesus Christ or a terrorist named Barabbas should be released? The crowd voted for Barabbas. Pilate was given a note from his wife to not have anything to do with Jesus because she was having bad dreams over it. The crowd demanded Jesus be crucified and Pilate told them Jesus hadn't done anything wrong and so refused to be responsible for their decision. He gave the crowd Barabbas and had Jesus whipped, and turned Him over to be crucified. The soldiers dressed Jesus in a scarlet robe and shoved a crown of thorns onto His head and put a stick in his hands and mocked Him. They took the stick and beat Him with it. When they were done with that they put His own clothes back on Him. On the way to crucify Jesus they met a man and made him carry the cross. They went to Golgotha and offered Jesus a drink of wine mixed with gall (wiki defines this as medicine) to drink but after He tasted it He refused it. The soldiers nailed Jesus to the cross and then gambled to see who would win His clothes. They put a sign over Him which read, "THIS IS JESUS, KING OF THE JEWS." Two robbers were also crucified beside Jesus. People yelled at Jesus and insulted Him. The sky turned dark for about 3 hours. Jesus asked God why He had forsaken Him, but the people thought He was talking about Elijah. Someone soaked a sponge in vinegar and put it on a stick for Jesus. Jesus shouted again and He died. Immediately, the curtain in the temple tore in two from top to bottom, there was an earthquake and the people who loved God who had died were raised to life. The soldiers realized that Jesus really is God's son. Several women were present to see to Jesus' needs. That evening a rich man named Joseph went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Joseph wrapped the body in clean linen and put the body in his own tomb he had carved out of rock. He rolled the stone in in front of the opening and left. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary had been sitting across from the tomb the whole time. The next day (Sabbath) the chief priests and elders asked Pilate to put a guard on the tomb because Jesus had told them He would rise again after 3 days. They thought the disciples would take the body and claim it had been resurrected. So Pilate had soldiers guard the tomb.

After the Sabbath, Mary and Mary went to the tomb. An earthquake shook the earth, an angel came from heaven and rolled the stone from the door and sat on it. The angel was bright as lightning. The guards became catatonic from fear, and the angel told the women not to be afraid. He told them he knew why they were there and to come inside the tomb and look where Jesus had been. He wasn't there because He had been raised to life. The angel told them to tell the disciples that Jesus lives and that He is on His way to Galilee. The angel told them to go there and see Him. They left there and met Jesus. They touched his feet and worshiped Him. The chief priests and elders bribed the soldiers to tell people that Jesus body was stolen in the night. The 11 went to Galilee to meet Jesus. They worshiped Him and He told them He had been given all authority in heaven and earth. Jesus told them to go to all the people and make them disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and teach them to do what Jesus taught. Jesus will be with us always, even until the end of the world.

Tomorrow read Mark 1-3
