June 30, 2010 Psalms 78:25-72

78. Continued. God sent the people all the food they could eat. Still they were ungrateful and complained because they wanted something different. God sent them quail and while they were still eating it God's wrath came down on them and He cut down the young men of Israel. It didn't matter, they kept right on sinning. They did not believe. When God killed them they eagerly tried to be good, but then they would forget and return to their lives of sin. God could have wiped them off the face of the earth, but time and again He restrained Himself. They vexed God again and again.
They had even witnessed all the miracles God performed to free them from Pharaoh in Egypt. He turned the river to blood, sent swarms of flies, an infestation of frogs, grasshoppers ate crops, the fruit went to locusts, He sent hail and ruined their vines and figs and cattle, their livestock was struck with lightning. He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt. God brought out His people like a flock and led them through the desert. He destroyed their enemies in the sea.
He drove the people out of the promised land so the Israelites could move in. They continued to rebel and test God. They worshiped idols and God gave them up to their enemies. But God awoke as if from sleep and He beat back his enemies. He chose the tribe of Judah and built his sanctuary. He chose David, who tended sheep and made him the shepherd of Israel. David shepherded them with integrity, guiding them with skillful hands.

June 29, 2010 Psalms 76:8-78:24

76. Continued. When God doled out His punishments to the children of Israel, they got scared and started cleaning up their acts. Don't forget God! Promise to be faithful and then do it!

77. The Call to God for Help. Asaph prayed to God to listen to his cries for help. Once he used to wonder if God's love had vanished forever. Had God forgotten to be merciful? Then he thought about all the mighty miracles God had performed on behalf of His people. He realized no other god had performed such miracles. Time and again He had saved them. Asaph recalled the mighty miracle of the parting of the Red Sea, how the water obeyed God and bent to His will, parting so the people could walk across led by Moses and Aaron.

78. God's Guidance of His People in Spite of Their Unfaithfulness. Asaph offered parables of instruction to teach about the works of God so that their children would know them. God's law was established in Israel just as He had commanded their fathers. They were to teach it to every generation so that they would obey God's commandments and not make the same mistakes of their elders. They were a stubborn and rebellious generation whose hearts had turned from God. They turned away from God and did not keep God's covenant. Even as God parted the sea and led them by day and night in the pillar of cloud and fire, or made water pour from a rock, they continued to sin. They tested God deliberately, demanding the food they wanted to eat rather than the food he had provided for them. They refused to believe that God could give them anything - they possessed neverending doubt. They did not believe in or trust God, yet again and again He took care of them.

June 28, 2010 Psalms 73:21-76:7

73. Continued. Asaph tells of a time when he was full of pain and bitter and behaved like an ignorant beast. Still he knew that he was not alone, that God was his guide and companion. He knew his true strength was in God. He knew that those who are not with God will perish, but he had made God his sovereign.

74. A Plea for Relief. Asaph asked God why He had rejected them? He asked God to remember His people from old and redeem them. God's enemies destroyed the sanctuary and defiled His dwelling place. They were determined to destroy God. Asaph wondered how long God would let the enemy think they had won. Asaph asked God to destroy them. He knew God brought salvation and that He performed saving miracles. Asaph asked God to defend them.

75. The Justice of God. Asaph thanked God for being there. Judgement is God's and He knows when that time will be. God tells the arrogant to stop bragging to Him about how great they think they are. No one can make a man great, but God will be the judge. Wicked people drink God's wrath. As for Asaph, he promised to sing praises to God!

76. The Victorious Power of God. Judah belonged to God. He protected His people from arrows and weapons of war. None of the most valiant warriors can go up against God. All are helpless when He is angry.

June 27, 2010 Psalms 71:17-73:20

71. Continued. David had felt God's presence in his life from the time he was young. He asked God to remain with him always. Even though God had given David trials, he knew that all would be well. David promised to sing praises to God for the help he had been given.

72. The Reign of the Righteous King. (Many Bible scholars believe this psalm to be about Christ.) Solomon asked God to bless the royal son with righteousness and good judgement. He would defend the poor and bless the children. He would live forever like the sun and moon. He would be as refreshing as rain on parched earth. He would rule over all the earth. He cares for the needy. May he be given gold from Sheba and may people pray for him and bless him. Let food be plentiful. All nations will be blessed by him and call him blessed. Praise be to God.
This ends the prayers of David, son of Jesse.

Book 3
73. The End of the Wicked Contrasted with That of the Righteous. (By Asaph) God is good to the pure in heart. But Asaph had slipped by being jealous of foolish and arrogant wicked people. They have no struggles and they are healthy and strong. Life is easy for them. They adorn themselves with their sinful ways. They are judgemental and cruel and because of their pride they use violence easily. They think they know more than God. Asaph had tried to be good, but he had a hard time until he saw the big picture. Once he understood that the wicked would be swept away like a bad dream, then things fell into place for him.

June 26, 2010 Psalms 69:5 - 71:16

Today I went to Santa Cruz. We walked on the beach at sunset. Beautiful!

69.  Continued. God knew David's sins and David knew that. He wanted to be a good example. Sometimes his family did things that didn't make any sense and he felt embarrassed. David felt great passion for God and took insults personally. People didn't understand the ways he worshiped God. David asked God to help and protect him. David felt threatened and needed God to save him. David knew God understood his hardships and he asked for mercy. David asked God to punish his unmerciful enemies. The rest of this chapter is a biblical rant, clearly David is very unhappy about the way he's been treated. So, if you're ever really angry, talk to God - he can take it. David chose to offer God a song rather than a burnt offering. All of creation will praise God.

70.  God is Wonderful. David asked God for help. David asked God to let the righteous people see his power. David knew God would help him and he asked him to hurry.

71. Prayer for God's Protection. David asked God for His protection. David knew God was his rock and would always protect him, he just asked Him again to make double sure. David asked God to deal harshly with his enemies. David vowed to praise God always.

June 25, 2010 Psalms 68:5-69:4

Happy Birthday to my youngest, Robert! He is 19 today. Add another one! My second granddaughter is one today!!

68. Continued. From His sacred home, God is father to the fatherless, a protector of the widows, and finds families for the lonely, but all who rebel against Him live in a scorching desert. From the pillar of cloud and fire, God led His people and prepared the land for them to inherit. They settled in the land and God generously provided for the needy. God gave the command and a great host of women proclaimed good tidings. (I'd like to know more about this!) They said that kings and armies fled in haste, the women who stayed behind divided the spoils. Cowards who lay down amidst the flocks for protection were like metal birds, ornamental but not useful. David described a beautiful mountain range and told it not to be jealous that God didn't choose to live there. God has millions of chariots and He has come from Sinai to His sanctuary. God's enemies didn't want Him to live on Sinai, but they brought Him gifts anyway. God is good and treats us well, He saves us from death. God crushed His enemies, who go on about their evil ways.
A parade of people came to God's house to worship Him. First were the singers, then the musicians surrounded by young women who played tambourines. They shouted
"People of Israel praise the Lord God!" They were followed by the princes of the tribes of Benjamin, Judah, Zebulun and Naphtali. David asked God to show His strength as He had done before. Because of His temple, people would bring God gifts. David asked God to vanquish the Godless enemies surrounding them who behaved like wild animals.
Sing to God and praise Him. Proclaim God's power and honor Him in Israel, He rules the skies. God is fearsome in His temple, He makes us strong. Praise be to God!

69. The Prayer for Deliverance. David felt as though he were drowning in hatred from his enemies. His only help would come from God. David was forced to replace what he did not steal.

June 24, 2010 Psalms 65-68:4

65. God's Abundant Favor to Earth and Man. Silent reflection gives way to joyful praise to God. He hears our prayers and answers them. Even though we are overcome by our sins, God forgives. David was grateful for the blessings God gave to His chosen ones who lived near the temple. God does things that terrify the wicked and cause the righteous to sing praises to Him. God gives hope to everyone all over the earth. People are afraid of nature's awesome power - signs of God's presence. God visits the earth and creates abundance of water, grain and flocks in the meadows. The earth shouts for joy!

66. God's Power and Works. Shout with joy and praise God! Tell God that everything He does is awesome! God's enemies reluctantly obey Him. The earth sings praises to God. Come and see what God has done, he dried the sea so people could walk across on dry land. He sees everything. Praise God loudly so it can be heard. God kept them alive, though He tested and refined them, and brought them to a place of abundance. David promised to come to the temple and fulfill his vows to God. Vows he spoke when he was in trouble. (Been there, done that.) David promised to make offerings to God. David gave thanks to God for his answered prayers and love.

67. Tell the Nations to Praise God. David asked God to bless them and make His face shine upon them. He hoped everyone on the earth would know God and praise Him. He wished that all the nations would be glad and sing for joy because God rules the people justly. The land would yield it's harvest and God would bless them.

68. The God of Israel. David hoped that God would arise and cause his enemies to flee - like smoke in the wind may they be blown away. As wax melts in fire, so the wicked would perish before God. The righteous would be glad and rejoice because of God. Be happy and joyful and sing to God, praise His name.

June 23, 2010 Psalms 61-64

61. Confidence in God's Protection. David knew his strength came from God. He longed to take refuge in the shelter of His wings. He knew God heard him. He was grateful for his heritage of righteous men and women. He prayed for his longevity and to be in God's presence, protected by Him. He would sing praises to God to fulfil his vow.

62. God Alone a Refuge from Treachery and Oppression. David understood that his soul found peace from God. He knew that with God he would be protected. Wicked people delight in destroying each other with lies and violence. David admonished people to place their trust in God. Worldly standing is meaningless, don't trust in extortion, or take pride in stolen goods, or if you become wealthy don't believe that it means anything. David heard two things when God spoke once: 1. God is strong. 2. God is loving. David knew God would reward each person according to what he has done.

63. The Thirsty Soul is Satisfied in God. In the Desert of Judah, David composed these words to praise God. As David's body thirsted for water, so did his soul thirst for God. Just as water is life, David knew that God was even more so. David knew God's love was better than life, and he would proclaim it. David's soul was satisfied with the richest of foods - the love of God. David remembered God wherever he was and knew that God would protect him.

64. A Prayer for Deliverance from Secret Enemies. David prayed for God's protection from threats of his enemies. David knew that the small minds of men were no match for God. So he went to the top and asked for help. He asked that they would be trapped by their own evil plots and stopped. Through these actions everyone would know the works of God and rejoice in Him.

Tomorrow read Psalms 65-68:4

June 22, 2010 Psalms 57:4-60:12

57. Continued. David prayed for protection from his enemies which he described by comparing them to wild flesh-eating beasts. Then he remembered the glory of God. His enemies laid a trap for him and fell into it themselves. David's great comfort was his music. God had saved him time and again and he was grateful.

58. Prayer for the Punishment of the Wicked. David noticed that some high and mighty people were not judging with justice, but with the desires of their own evil schemes. Evil is as evil does. David asked God to silence them by making them go away. Still though, it sounds gross to bathe one's feet in the blood of the wicked. However, that might get the message across to everyone that God rules!

59. Prayer for Triumph Over Enemies. Back in 1Samuel 19:11, we read about Saul sending his men, led by his son and David's good friend, Jonathan, to David's house to kill him. This was after David killed Goliath and was married to Saul's daughter Michal. David prayed for protection from the men who wanted to kill him even though he hadn't done anything wrong. David described them as snarling dogs prowling around the city. David knew that God was his fortress and that He would protect him. David asked God not to kill them or people would forget that it was God who had saved David.

60. Prayer for National Deliverance. David asked God for forgiveness and healing of the people and the land. They had fought and defeated the Edomites under the command of Joab and his brother Abishai. (This is briefly reviewed in 1Chronicles 18:12-13, though the number slain is different.) Verses 5-12 are identical to part of Psalm 108. David's plea was for victory over the nations they fought. David knew they needed God's help or they would not succeed.

June 21, 2010 Psalms 55-57:3

55. Cast your Cares on the Lord. David prayed when he was afraid and feeling sad. Those who sought his destruction vexed him. David feared death and he wanted to fly far away, like a dove, to the desert and find rest. David asked God to confuse the wicked. It doesn't say, but I suspect that the close friend David speaks of is probably Saul. Death could take his enemies, but he himself prayed to God for deliverance. He had seen God at work against enemies on the battlefield and knew that God was there for him. David knew that God would help him. God sustains those who love him.

56. A Prayer of Trust in God. In the note before this Psalm begins, it says that this Psalm was written when the Philistines had seized David in Gath. You can review this in 1Samuel 21:10-15. David had acted like a crazy man drooling and scribbling on the walls, so they let him go. He went to hide in a cave. David asked God for mercy because men were hot on his trail all day. He decided to trust in God whenever he was afraid. (Good advice!) He knew he had been saved by God and that God was the light of his life.

57. The Mercy and Truth of God. The note above the Psalm says that David had fled from Saul into the cave. (1Samuel 22:1-5) David must have spent some time in this cave because he was joined by other men seeking refuge, which they eventually found in the land of the Philistines in Ziklag. Again David asked God for mercy. His soul found peace in God, and he would remain under God's protection until the danger had passed. David knew that God had a purpose for him and that he was working to fulfill it. God saved David and rebuked his enemies. God sent David His love and faithfulness.

June 20, 2010 Psalms 51:10-54:7

51. Continued. If you need advice on what to ask God for, this next passage is just what you want. Sometimes we sing a song in church with these words, which are simple and good to live by. Just as David asked God to help him want to live according to God's commandments, we can too. We aren't alone, we have help!

52. The Fate of the Wicked. They boast about all the evil things they do and say to each other. They love evil more than good. They would rather lie than tell the truth. God will bring them down and remove them from their comfortable lives. David compared himself to a fruitful olive tree, flourishing in God's house. He knew he could count on God's love forever. He would praise God where His people gathered.

53. The Fate of the Fool. This Psalm is very similar to the 14th Psalm. The fool doesn't believe that God exists. Because of that they have no way of knowing right from wrong. They think anything they can get away with is ok. God looks down from heaven to find His people, but finds only fools. The wicked continue in their wicked ways, greedily gobbling up the people of God. The Godless will be terrified and overwhelmed even though there is nothing to be scared of. They will be ashamed when God rejects them. David yearned for someone to come from Zion to save Israel so the people would be glad.

54. Trusting God in Times of Trouble. Way back in March we read in 1Samuel 26, about Saul searching for David because the Ziphites came and told him where to find him. This is a song David wrote and sang during that ordeal. David asked God for protection and help against his enemies. He knew God would help him and that no one could stand against God and survive. David promised to make a sacrifice and praise God because He saved him from his troubles.

Tomorrow read Psalms 55-57:3

June 19, 2010 Psalms 49-51:9

49. The Folly of Trusting in Riches. Everybody listen up! You can't buy life. Money won't save you. Believing that you are special because you have a lot of money is believing a lie. Go ahead if you really want to, but you won't be happy. The Beatles said it too, "Can't buy me love." Everybody dies, both rich and poor, smart and foolish, the righteous and the wicked, you can't buy your way out of it. Money can't buy happiness. I saw a t-shirt once that said, "Money may not buy happiness, but it makes the misery more tolerable!" That may be true. Anyway, David believed that God would redeem his life from the grave. He was right, that's what Jesus did! Don't be jealous of rich people - they won't be taking it with them. David said, "A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish."

50. True and False Religion. This psalm was written by Asaph who was a music director. He is listed in 1Chronicles 25:1-2 as having children who participate in the music of the temple. In a fiery storm God approaches, when He comes to judge His people. God will tell us that He doesn't want offerings of animals, He wants us to be thankful and keep our word. In troubled times we pray to Him and He rescues us. So to thank Him we honor Him. When people reject God's commandments and make evil choices, He doesn't say anything, but He will tear them apart if they don't start to obey Him. Obey God and He will show His power to save.

51. A Prayer for Forgiveness. David asked God to have mercy on him. He asked God to wash away his sins and blot them out forever. David knew what he'd done, and he was sorry, but he couldn't forget his guilt. David asked God to teach him true wisdom, wash him clean and let him be happy.

June 18, 2010 Psalms 45:13-48:14

Me on the way to Half Dome two years ago today. God's cathedral!

45. Continued. The bride, resplendent in her gown embellished with threads of gold, enters the King's palace, in gladness and celebration, followed by her bridesmaids. Your sons and grandsons will be kings. David would cause God's name to be celebrated in all generations. People will praise God forever and ever.

46. The presence of God in calamity. God is our strength and protection. When we're in trouble, He's right there with us. We won't be afraid even if everything falls apart including the earth. The spirit of God flows everywhere like a river to those who love God and live with Him in the City of God. Men have their fights and disagreements, but God speaks and stops it all. Come and see what the Lord has done. He stops wars, breaks weapons, ends wars all over the earth. He commands us to be still and know that He is God.

47. God the King of the Earth. Sing praises to God, clap your hands, shout with a joyful noise (woohoo!) How awesome is God! He subdued David's enemies and gave the Israelites their inheritance. God is the King of the Earth and He sits on his holy throne. Even the kings of earth belong to God.

48. The Beauty and Glory of Zion. The Lord is great and deserves our praise! The place where He lives is beautiful and majestic. God defended the City of David (Mount Zion) making it unconquerable. Their enemies took a look and trembled with fear and ran away. God secured His city forever. In God's temple they meditated on His steadfast love. God is great and praised everywhere on earth. His victories were celebrated and Judah rejoiced. They walked around the city and looked at the towers and structures - so strong that no enemies could conquer them. God will guide us forever and ever.

June 17, 2010 Psalms 43-45:12

43. A plea for Deliverance. David asked God to protect him from evil people. He felt sad about the way his enemies treated him. David asked God to send His light and truth to guide him. He would praise God with his harp. He reminded his soul not to be sad.

44. Former Deliverances and Present Troubles. Their fathers had told them of the ways God caused His people to be victorious over their enemies and troubles. David swore that God was his King and that he didn't trust his bow or sword, he trusted God. Praise His name forever! David continued to plead for the people who were being slaughtered by enemies. He begged God not to forget them. Verse 22 is quoted in Romans 8:36, and goes on to remind the Christians that nothing - even death - can separate them from God's love.

45. A Song Celebrating the King's Marriage. This Psalm is set at a wedding and describes the glory and delights which usually accompany such happy occasions. In Luke 24:44, Jesus spoke of being mentioned in Psalms as well as other places in scripture. Sometimes Jesus is referred to as the bridegroom.
David's heart was full of beautiful words which flowed from him as if he were a great writer. He spoke of the bridegroom who was more handsome than any other men, grace was poured on His lips and God has blessed Him forever. He wears his sword and fine clothes of splendor and majesty, honor is His always. His arrows pierce the hearts of the King's enemies. Nations will come and go, but God will reign forever. Justice is Yours divine authority and You hate evil. That is why God has blessed You above the others. Sweet aromas and beautiful palaces surround You, and heavenly music fills You with joy. Daughters of kings are among Your honored women, Your bride is at Your right hand and dressed in gold. David warns the bride to forget her family and do what the King desires. The richest people try to have influence over the King.

June 16, 2010 Psalms 40-42

Bridalveil Fall Yosemite May 30, 2010 Photo taken by my beautiful daughter, Nicole Foran

40. Delight in the will of the Lord. David waited patiently, the Lord heard him cry and lifted him out of the muck and mire and gave him a firm place to stand. People would hear him sing a new song of praise to God and they too would trust the Lord. God blesses all those who trust Him and don't worship idols. David wanted to list all the marvelous works of God, but they are too numerous to name. What God really wants from us is to obey His law. God doesn't want animals sacrificed, He wants us to obey his commandments, to love him and each other. (In Hebrews 10:5-9, Jesus tells God nearly the same thing and explains that God didn't really want animals sacrificed for our sins, but until Jesus came and paid for our sins with his blood that's what was done to atone.) David spoke freely about his love for God. David asked God for His blessings and protection.

41. Psalm of the compassionate. The Lord takes care of us. David asked for God's blessing and forgiveness. David's enemies gossiped about him and even his best friend betrayed him. David was grateful for God's love and support. He would praise God forever.

Book 2

42. Yearning for God. As the deer thirsts for water, so David's soul was parched for the only cure - the living God. He thought of the good times dancing and singing on his way to the house of God. David spoke to his soul to not be sad, but to remember that God was there with him. David would remember God as he thought of the rivers and roaring waterfalls which seemed to speak to each other through their thunder. Every day God was kind to David, at night He gave him a song - a prayer to the living Lord God. David reminded himself not to be discouraged because God was with him.

Tomorrow read Psalms 43-45:12

20100615

June 15, 2010 Psalms 37:27-39:13

37. Continued. Stop your evil ways and do good and the Lord will not forsake you. The righteous will be protected forever while the wicked will die out. The righteous man knows God's law so well he knows it by heart. The Lord will protect the righteous from the wicked. Trust the Lord and follow Him. David had seen wicked people flourish like a strong tree and suddenly vanish. Even when he looked for them, David could find no trace of them. The honest and trustworthy families had a bright future, but the wicked would disappear. The Lord protects His people and they can come to Him in times of trouble. When they do come to Him, he saves them.

38. The burden of suffering. The burden of David's guilt tortured him so much that he asked God not to add to it. David was in pain and agony in both body and spirit. He knew God could see everything in his heart. Even his friends avoided his company. David could say nothing - he had no excuses. He confessed his sins while his enemies gathered against him. David asked God to stay near him in his time of need.

39. In time of trouble. David had promised to be good. But his anguish only increased. He asked God to show him the end of his life and reveal to him how short were his days. Each man's life is but a breath and it disappears like a shadow. Human struggles are senseless, we collect our trinkets even though we can't take them with us. David wept and pleaded to God for forgiveness so he could be happy again.

Tomorrow read Psalms 40-42

20100614

June 14, 2010 Psalms 35:22-37:26

35. Continued. David prays for God to be with him and defend him against his enemies. David wanted his enemies defeated and his supporters glad for his success. He declared he would praise God all day long.

36. Wickedness confronts God's love. The wicked person does not know or fear God. He flatters himself so much that he cannot recognize his sin or change his choices. His words are lies and betrayal. He continually seeks evil.
God's love is greater that the greatest thing we can imagine. It is there for all who seek it, no matter what their situation in life. We feast on the abundance of God's love. God's love is the fountain of life. We see light in God's light. David asked for God to continue to love those who know God, and drive the wicked away.

37. Blessings to the righteous. Evil men will pass away. Simply trust that God will take care of you and lay your worries on Him. Do what the Lord wants and he will give you your heart's desire. Commit to Him and trust Him and He will do this. It will become clear as noonday to you that you are on the right path. Be patient, don't get discouraged when you see wicked people succeeding. Don't let your anger cause you to sin. Trust God. Wicked and merciless people hurt good people, but remember what goes around comes around. They will receive what they give out. "It is better to live right and be poor than to be sinful and rich." God will empower the faithful and the wicked will be made weak. God takes care of those who love Him. If you do what the Lord wants He will help you. You may stumble, but you won't crash and burn. David recalls that good people have never been left helpless, their children have never had to beg for food. Those who love God gladly take care of each other.

Tomorrow read Psalms 37:27-39:13

20100613

June 13, 2010 Psalms 33:6-35:21

33. Continued. The heavens and all that is were made because God spoke. God's plans stand firm forever, but not those of men. God watches and sees everything people do. God loves those whose hope is in his unfailing love. We trust His holy name.

34. A psalm of praise and trust. David made a commitment to lavishly praise God at all times. David sought the Lord who delivered him from all his fears. The angel of the Lord lives near those who fear God. David advised that we "taste and see that the Lord is good." Those who seek God will have all their needs met. David's advice to those who wanted to live a long life was to speak truth, do good and seek peace and go after it.

35. A plea for judgment. David asked God to fight against those who went up against David. He asked that his enemies be disgraced and shamed, their plans to ruin David foiled, and that they be driven away by the angel of the Lord. David praised God for rescuing the poor from those who would kick them when they are down. To those who had been troubled, David showed compassion, but when he needed their support they betrayed him. David asked God to prevent his enemies from gloating over any misfortune of David's and bearing false witness against him.

Tomorrow read Psalms 35:22-37:26

June 12, 2010 Psalms 31:6-33:5

31. Continued. David hated idol worshipers. David loved God and knew He had saved him. David asked God for help because he was in trouble. People wanted David dead and the only one he could trust was God. David asked God to rise up against the wicked and defeat them. David loved God because He he knew God heard him cry out to Him. Love the Lord and put your hope in Him.

32. A prayer during distress. Blessed is the forgiven man. Once David confessed his sins to God he became strong. David knew God would protect him. David could hear the voice of God telling him He would teach him the way he should go, and He would counsel and guide him. When a man trusts God, he is protected by God. Be grateful and rejoice in the Lord!

33. The Lord provides and delivers. Praise God with your songs, harps and lyres. Sing and shout for joy! The word of the Lord in true and He is faithful. The Lord loves justice and righteousness and the earth is full of his unfailing love.

June 11, 2010 Psalms 27:7-31:5

27. Continued. David asked God to hear him and be merciful to him. He heard his heart seeking the face of God. Though his father and mother abandon him, he knew God would not. David expressed confidence that he would see the goodness of God in the land of the living.

28. A prayer of help. As David called to the Lord he lifted up his hands. He asked for protection from his enemies who were nice to their neighbors while secretly despising them. Because they have no regard for the works of God, He will tear them down. David was joyful because of the help God gave him. He asked God to bless His people and carry them forever.

29. The Lord of the thunderstorm. All glory, strength and honor belong to God. The God of glory thunders. His voice is everywhere, over the waters, in the forests, in the desert, over the people. His voice is powerful and majestic and He blesses His people with peace.

30. The Lord is my helper. David described what God did to save him from his enemies. God's anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime. David asked what good it would do if he died, because then he couldn't praise God. David gave all credit to God for turning his wailing into dancing, and clothing him with joy. David promised to praise God forever.

31. My times are in thy hand. David took refuge in God and asked for His protection. He asked God to hear his prayers. God was his rock and fortress, and he asked God to lead and guide him. He committed his spirit to God and asked him to save him. David called God the God of truth.

June 10, 2010 Psalms 24:7-27:6

24. Continued. This next part sounds like the chorus of a song to me as David told the gates to open to the Lord, the King of glory, so He could come in.

25. Prayer for guidance and protection. David trusted God and depended on Him for help with his enemies. David asked God not to shame him because he loved and trusted Him. David also asked for guidance from God to show him the paths God wanted him to take. He asked forgiveness for his sins and asked that God remember him in love. To those who love Him and obey his commandements, God's ways are good. David knew that He could depend on God. David asked for protection from his enemies and ease from his worries, fears and anguish. David asked God to redeem Israel from their troubles as well.

26. The basis of judgement. David justified himself by listing the ways he followed the commandments God. He asked God to test and try him and see if he didn't pass the test. He did not hang out with deceitful people or hypocrites. He didn't approve of wicked people and their actions. He worshiped God and rejoiced in the temple. David asked God not to treat him like a sinner and take away his life. David obeyed God's commandments and he intended to continuing to do so.

27. David's song of fearless trust in God. With God on his side, David didn't fear anyone. No matter what enemy attacked, he knew God was on his side and would protect him. David wanted one thing: to live in God's house all his life and seek Him in the temple. David knew God would protect him and he would sing praises to God.

June 9, 2010 Psalms 22-24:6

22. A cry of anguish. (There are some remarkable similarities in this psalm and the crucifixion of Jesus as told in the Book of Matthew. Also, I would like to know what circumstance David found himself in at the time he wrote this psalm.) David felt that God abandoned him and asked why? David expressed feelings of shame and unworthiness yet in spite of that God gave him life. David belonged to God before he was born. David felt afraid and vulnerable to the dangers he sensed all around him. His courage and strength were low. David spoke of intense thirst, of having his hands and feet pierced, and his garments being divided by lot among the gloating onlookers. David asked for God to stay near him and protect him. David praised God and knew that God takes care of those who suffer. People will always know God because he wills it.

23. The shepherd psalm. God knows what we need and will make sure we have it. In Him we'll find rest, protection and comfort. David knew that his life would be sweet and that he'd live with God forever.

24. Song to the King of glory. The earth and everything in it belongs to God. People who do and think good will be with the Lord. People who seek God shall be saved.

June 8, 2010 Psalms 18:37-21:13

18. Continued. David gave credit to God for his success in battle. David knew that God had given him what he had - his possessions and responsibilities. David praised God who had his back.

19. The works and word of God. The skies continually tell of the wonders of God. Day after day, night after night, though they never speak a word, their message informs everyone on the planet that God is there. God has made the heavens like a tent for the sun, enclosing it's heat on the earth. God's law is perfect, giving us life and light and joy. There is great reward in keeping God's commandments. David asked God to keep him from sin. He hoped his offering of song and thoughts were pleasing to God.

20. A prayer for the king. David asked for help from God for guidance and protection. He also hoped for God to accept his sacrifices and burnt offerings. He asked for the desires of his heart to be granted and his plans to succeed. He would know the reason for his success was that God had allowed it. David knew that God had saved him and answers prayers. He knew some people put their trust in their horses and chariots, but he put his trust in God. His enemies were made weak while he was strong.

21. Splendor and success of the king. God blessed David lavishly. He granted him the desire of his heart (and why not, since his heart's desire was to please God?) David was given material wealth as well as a prosperous kingdom. He was protected from his enemies as he praised God.

June 7, 2010 Psalms 17:6-18:36

17. Continued. David asked God to hear and help him. He asked God to keep him as the apple of his eye and protect him. David was surrounded by arrogant people and he asked God to be with him, to deal with them in His way and resuce him from them. David asked God to rescue him from men whose reward was in this life, not the next. David looked forward to seeing God.

18. Calling upon God in distress. (David sang after God delivered him from Saul) David told God he loved Him. God is the great protector. When David was in danger, he called on the Lord for help and got it. The earth shook because God was angry. God rode cherubim and flew, soaring on the wind. Darkness camouflaged Him as he advanced with hail and lightning bolts preceeding Him. He routed David's enemies with his voice and lightning bolts. They scattered before God. David sank beneath the surface of the deep and God reached in and lifted him out of danger. David thought he was doomed, but God saved him. God rescued David because he loved him. David believed that God had saved him because of his righteousness. God gives us back what we give to Him. God's way is perfect, His word is flawless, and He is a shield for those who take refuge in Him. God took care of David and gave him strength, He came down to David's level to help him. God cared so much for David that He even took care to protect David's ankles!

June 6, 2010 Psalms 11-17:5

11. "The Lord our refuge." David found relief and protection with God. When given advice to run and hide from his enemies, David knew that the Lord would protect him. He also knew that the wicked would burn. For the Lord loves justice.

12. "Good thoughts for bad times." David asked God for help since everyone was lying and deceiving each other. They flattered themselves that they didn't need God. They oppressed the weak and needy whom God would protect. The words of God are flawless. The wicked strut proudly in their ways of sin.

13. "The deserted soul." David asked God how long He would hide from him. He wondered how long he would wrestle with his thoughts and feel sad. David asked God to give him life - he knew he couldn't live without God. David trusted God's unfailing love and it made him glad.

14. "The fate of the fool." The fool says "There is no God." God looks for those who seek Him, but finds that they have turned from Him. The wicked, who kill people and don't talk to God, never learn. They become overwhelmed with fear because God is present with the righteous. Evil people preyed on the poor who are protected by God. David hoped that Israel would be righteous and receive the Lord's blessing.

15. "The happiness of the holy." David asked God what made people worthy to be in His presence. The answer is those who walk with integrity and righteousness. They don't lie, gossip, hurt people, blame, disgrace or shame them. Evil people despise him but he honors those who love God. He does not cheat people out of their money. The person that chooses to live this way will be stedfast in God.

16. "Joy in God's presence." David described the ways he delighted in his relationship with God. He had no need of the other gods that other people worshiped. David was happy with the blessings God gave him. He found comfort with God. David knew God would fill him with joy and eternal pleasures in his presence.

17. "Deliverance from the wicked." David asked for God to hear him. He told Him to search his heart and He would see that David had chosen to obey God.

June 5, 2010 Psalms 9-10

9. Praise to God for deliverance. David promised to praise God with all his heart and tell of his wonders. He was glad and rejoiced because of Him. His enemies were powerless against God who defended David in battle, so that even their memory vanished. God is always there for people who seek Him. David asked God to allow him to live so he could praise Him. David's enemies were caught in their own traps. The downtrodden and needy will be remembered by God. David asked God to remind the nations they were only men.

10. God hears and acts. David asked God why he stayed so far away from him. The wicked man hunts the weak caught up in his evil schemes. He is boastful, greedy and renounces God with abusive language. There is no room for God in his thoughts. He is always wealthy, haughty, and sneers at his enemies. He believes nothing can touch him, that he'll always be happy and never have trouble. He speaks curses, lies and threats. He uses violence against the weak and thinks God doesn't see. David asks God to defend the helpless against the wicked man. He knows God will break the wicked man and help his victims. David knows that God will take care of the afflicted. The Lord is King for ever and ever. Nations will come and go, but God will always be there.

June 4, 2010 Psalms 5:8-8:9

5. Continued. David asks God to lead him and help him understand what God wants him to do. He can't believe anything his enemies say and he asks God to punish them. He asks blessings on all those who love God.

6. A prayer for mercy during trouble. David begs God not to discipline him when he is angry, but rather have pity for him. Instead he asks God to rescue him through His unfailing love and keep him alive so he can praise Him. David is exhausted from sobbing and his bed is soaked with tears. His eyes are failing because of his enemies. David warns his enemies that God has heard his prayer and they had better leave him alone.

7. The prayer of a wronged man. David asks God to save him from those who would pursue him and tear him apart like a lion - no one else will save him. If he is guilty of hurting someone, then let them have him. David asks God to rise up and fight his enemies and to be the judge of people. He knows minds and hearts and can bring an end to violence and make the righteous secure. God is his shield and saves the good people. He judges everyone fairly and prepares his arsenal. Bad people have bad ideas and ways which catch up with them and trap them. David gives thanks to the Lord and sings his praise.

8. God's glory and man's honor. How majestic is the name of God in all the earth! "Out of the mouth of babes" comes praise to silence enemies. When David considered the heavens which God made, the moon and stars which he set in place, he marveled that God honors man by allowing him to rule over His creation - all the creatures of the earth. God's name is majestic in all the earth!

June 3, 2010 Job 42:10-17; Psalms 1-5:7

Job prayed for his friends as he was instructed. The Lord restored everything that Job had lost and doubled his livestock. Job had 7 sons and 3 daughters (who were the prettiest girls around) and he lived 140 more years, saw his grandchildren to the fourth generation and died old and full of years.

Psalms - Book 1 - Psalms 1-41

1. The way of the righteous. An explanation of the nature of good and evil and what kind of life awaits each choice. People who love God find happiness while those who choose not to love God find ruin. I have been known put it that we are all doomed and God is the only way out.

2. The triumph of the king. Why do nations fight against each other? They seek ways to be godless. God promised David that he would smash the other nations like pottery. You other rulers pay attention to God and obey Him! He blesses and protects those who run to Him.

3. Confidence facing the enemy. (A Psalm written by David when he fled from his son, Absalom see 2Samuel 15:13-37) David expresses his sadness about having so many enemies, and rumors spreading that God would not save him. Selah (A term of uncertain meaning seen frequently throughout the Psalms.) But David bears witness that God is his shield, that when he cries to God he is answered. When he sleeps, God sustains him, so he does not fear his enemies. David asks God to strike down his enemies and deliver him. David acknowledges that deliverance comes from God and he asks a blessing on His people.

4. Thoughts in the night. David asked God to hear his prayer and give him relief. He wondered how long men would seek shame and delusions and false gods. David knew God heard his prayers. David offers some good advice, in your anger, do not sin, and when you are lying in bed, be silent and do your emotional homework. Offer right sacrifices to God and trust him. He knows God protects him and fills him with joy. He lies down and sleeps peacefully.

5. A morning prayer. David asks God to hear his morning prayer. When he makes his requests of God he waits expectantly for the answers. God does not tolerate the wicked, the arrogant, liars, bloodthirsty and deceitful people. Because of God's great mercy, David will come into His house and bow down in reverence.

June 2, 2010 Job 39:13-42:9

God continued speaking to Job. He told him about ostriches and storks and their lack of wisdom or fear. God asked Job if he gave the horse his strength and his flowing mane? The horse is unafraid of battle and charges in. God asked if the hawk took flight because of Job's wisdom? Does the eagle soar at Job's command and build his nest on high?

Then God asked Job to defend himself. Job answered that he was unworthy to answer and that he had no answer. Then God told Job to brace himself like a man and answer His questions. Would Job discredit God? Would Job condemn God to justify himself? Then God told him to adorn himself with splendor, unleash his fury, and bring down every proud man low. He told Job to crush the wicked and bury them in dust. If he could do all this then God would admit that Job's own hand could save him and he didn't need God. Then God told Job to look at the hippopotamus, which he created the same day as he created man. The hippo eats grass, yet has a huge body and bones like bronze. The hippo is strong, but God is stronger.

God continued questioning Job. He asked him if he could catch a sea monster with a fishhook? Could Job tie his mouth shut with a rope? Would he beg for mercy with kind and gentle words? Would he be your pet or slave? Would traders want to buy him? God told Job that if he were to wrestle with the sea monster once, that would be too much for him to handle. Could any man inspect him or capture him? Sparks and fire shoot from his mouth. The weakest part of the monster strike fear into the hearts of men. He is king over all that are haughty and proud.

Then Job replied to the Lord. He told Him that he knew He could do all things, that no plan of His could be thwarted. Job told God that he had heard His questions and his eyes had seen Him. Job repented in dust and ashes.

Epilogue
When God finished speaking to Job, He spoke to Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar and told them that Job had spoken truth about Him, but he was angry with them because they had not. God told them to make it up to Job by offering 7 bulls and goats as a sacrifice to please Him. Then God told them that Job would pray, and God would agree not to punish them for their foolishness. So they made the sacrifices and Job prayed and God accepted Job's prayer.

June 1, 2010 Job 36-39:12

Elihu continued by asking for Job's attention a little longer. He told Job that his knowledge came from God. When a person sins, God will tell them what they have done. He makes them listen and repent of their evil. If people obey and serve God they will live in prosperity and contentment the rest of their days. The wicked suffer and die young. He told Job that he was afflicted because of God's judgement. He warned him not to turn to evil which he seemed to prefer to affliction. No one can know the greatness of God. He manages the rain and storms and thunder.

Elihu continued by telling Job how thunder made his heart pound as he listened to the roar of God's voice. He does great things beyond our understanding. The animals remain in their dens as the storm breaks over the earth. He asked Job if he understood how God did any of this? Elihu ends his talk by telling Job that we cannot know God's awesome power and mystery - it is beyond our reach. But we revere Him because He does not regard people who rely on their own understanding.

Then the Lord answered Job out of the storm. He told Job to brace himself and answer the questions God had to ask him. God asked Job how the earth had been created, who placed the cornerstone, and how the ocean was made? God asked Job if he had ever told the sun to rise? And did it obey him? He asked Job if he had ever walked on the ocean floor? Did he know how large the earth is? God told Job to tell him if he did. Where does darkness live? Could he lead darkness home? He ought to be able to since he was already born when God created everything. Did he know where God kept the snow and hail? Where does the weather come from? Could Job arrange the stars? Could Job govern the heavens? Could Job command the heavens to rule the earth? Could he teach the birds to know when rain was on the way? Did he help hungry lions hunt? Did Job satisfy the hunger of the birds?

God continued questioning Job. God asked Job if he could tell when animals in the wild give birth? God told Job He alone helped the wild donkeys survive. God asked Job if a wild ox would agree to live in Job's barn and work for him? Could he trust his ox to bring the grain in to the threshing place?
