Paul rejoiced and gave thanks to God for news about how well the Ephesians were doing with the Way. He prayed that their minds would be opened to know God and see His light, hope and rich blessings He promises His people. He wanted the people to know how great His power is; the same power that raised Jesus from death. The church is Christ's body, completing Him as He completes all things.
Paul talked about life choices. In the past, the people were spiritually dead because they followed the evil ways of the world. They were controlled by the spirit who controls the people who don't follow God. Those people choose to live according to whatever their minds and bodies tell them to do. This makes God angry. Even so, God's mercy and love for us is so great that even though we were spiritually dead, He brought us back to life with Christ. God's grace has saved us all. He has prepared a life of good deeds for us to do. Paul reminded the Ephesians how it was for them before Christ when they were without God and hopeless. Christ's death on the cross broke the barriers so that all people could be God's people.
God had revealed His secret plan to Paul, the apostles and prophets. This secret is that God made it possible through Christ for everyone to have a part with the Jews in God's blessings. We are all the body of Christ. Paul felt privileged to bring the gospel to the Gentiles. In union with Christ we have the boldness to go into God's presence with confidence. Paul said, "I pray that you may have your roots and foundation in love, so that you, together with all God's people, may have the power to understand how broad and long, how high and deep, is Christ's love." (3:17-18)
Paul urged the Ephesians to always be humble, gentle, patient, tolerant and peaceful with each other, to preserve the unity of Spirit which binds you to each other. The body of Christ builds itself up through love. Paul warned them not to continue coarse speech and actions, but rather allow the Holy Spirit to change them. Use your words for good not evil! When you sin it makes the Holy Spirit sad. Show kindness to each other; forgive one another as God has forgiven you.
Since you are God's dear children, your lives must be controlled by love. Avoid the bad behavior and naughty words. Give thanks to God. Avoid those who do not live in the light. It is light that inspires, warms, and illuminates the truth. Don't waste your time on worthless things. Wake up sleepyhead, get with the living and the light of Christ will shine on you!
Tomorrow read Ephesians 5:15-6:24 & Phillipians 1-2
